Each of us carries within us a reservoir of strengths — peace, calm, courage, and clarity. At times, we act from these inner resources with ease; at other times, we forget they’re even there.
This meditation is a gentle reminder. It helps us reconnect with the strengths already within us by turning to nature as our guide. We reflect on the freshness of flowers, the solidity of a mountain, the clarity of still water, and the freedom of open space — qualities that mirror what lies inside.
The more we remember these inner strengths, the more naturally we can draw on them in moments of need.
Part I – Meditating on Strengths
Find your pebbles or piece of paper:
For this practice, we need four small pebbles that can fit in our palms. Each pebble represents one of the following: a flower, a mountain, still water and space.
You can paint or write the words on the pebbles. If you don’t have pebbles, use any small objects that can be held in your hands. Alternatively, draw four circles on a sheet of paper and write one word in each circle. You can then circle your hand over the words instead of holding physical objects.
Grounding
To begin, sit comfortably with the four pebbles next to you, within arm’s reach. Gently, and with full awareness, breathe in and out slowly three times.
Your breath is the link between your body and your mind. When you are in touch with your breath, you are in touch with yourself — both body and mind. And in that moment, you become a master of yourself in every situation.
Pebble 1 – A Flower
Pick up the first pebble and place it in your palm. Cover it with your other hand and close your eyes.
This pebble represents a flower. It also symbolizes your own freshness — your “flower nature.” Each of us is like a flower in the garden of humanity.
A flower reminds us that each day is a fresh start. A new day is a new life, full of possibilities.
We can smile to ourselves to remind us of the seed of freshness that lies within.
Repeat silently as you breathe:

Breathing in, I see myself as a flower.
Breathing out, I feel fresh.
FLower, fresh.
(Breathe slowly in and out three times.)
Pebble 2 – A Mountain
Put the first pebble aside and pick up the second.
This pebble represents a mountain — solid and steady.
There is a mountain inside each of us and it keeps us solid and calm. Solidity makes it possible for us to be happy – even in the midst of challenges.
Building stability and strength gives us the ability to not to be carried away by provocations, anger, fear, regret or anxiety. When you are solid, people can rely on you. Your solidity is something that you can offer to the people you love.
Repeat silently as you breathe:

Breathing in, I see myself as a mountain.
Breathing out, I feel solid.
Mountain, solidity
(Breathe slowly in and out three times.)
Pebble 3 – Still Water
Put the second pebble aside and pick up the third.
This pebble represents still water. When a lake is calm, it reflects the world around it clearly — the sky, the clouds, the trees.
When your mind is calm, you can see things as they really are. There is clarity. You are free from craving, anger, fear, and jealousy.
Repeat silently as you breathe:

Breathing in, I see myself as still water.
Breathing out, I see things as they truly are.
Water, reflecting
(Breathe in and out, slowly, three times.)
Pebble 4 – Space
Now pick up the last pebble, which represents space.
When we arrange flowers, we make sure each flower has space around it to shine. We are like that too. We need space to feel free and to grow.
We can give ourselves space to develop, to grow, to rest, to become a better person. We also need to give space to others to be who they are. It is one of the most precious things we can offer those we love.
We give space to ourselves when we accept ourselves as we are.
We give space to others when we accept them as they are.
Repeat silently as you breathe:

Breathing in, I see myself as space.
Breathing out, I am free.
Space, free
(Breathe slowly in and out three times.)
Now put the last pebble aside. Keep all the pebbles in a safe place, ready for the next practice, when you can continue nurturing the seeds of strength and happiness within.
Part II – Reflecting on the elements
In this part, we reflect on what each pebble represents in our own lives. Finish the sentences to reflect what each pebble means to you.
- Flower (Fresh):
I feel fresh, energetic, joyful, and playful when ______________
I am unable to feel ‘flower, fresh’ when ______________ - Mountain (Solid):
I feel solid, strong, and confident when ______________
Try and recall an incident when someone you know was truly ‘mountain, solid’. - Water (Reflecting):
I feel calm, still, and quiet when ______________
Try and recall an incident when someone you know was truly ‘water, reflecting’. - Space (Free):
I feel free, light, and relaxed when ______________
I am unable to feel ‘space, free’ when ______________
Expanding the Practice
You can use this meditation with other qualities too. For example, your pebbles might represent:
- Love
- Compassion
- Joy
- Inclusiveness (the four qualities of true love)
Or your pebbles could represent loved ones — your mother, father, sibling, friend, or grandparent. Holding each pebble, you can send your love to that person as you breathe three times.
